How to Hire the Right Nurse for your Facility
How to Hire the Right Nurse for your FacilityHow to Hire the Right Nurse for your FacilityHow to Hire the Right Nurse for your Facility DarienzoNurses are the front line of patient care. These professionals are often the first people patients see and frequently the last person they consult with before they go home. Thats why its so important to hire nurses who are a good fit for your facility and dedicated to providing quality care for patients. Here are five tips for making the right nursing hire.Find the right fit for your team.Think about the dynamics of your nursing staff. Do you have several big personalities who could benefit from someone whos a little mora reserved and quiet? Would someone whos lighthearted and bubbly clash with a more serious-minded nurse? You want people to learn to work together at your facility and to hire staff members who bring a unique perspective to the job. But you also want to platzdeckchen new employees up for success. Consider whether your new hire w ill complement other staff members personalities and fill a need on the team.Ask behavioral questions to determine character. Its important to hire competent nurses who have the right certifications and skills. Its equally important to hire nurses who are compassionate, collaborative and quick-thinking.Decipher which traits you want most in your next nursing hire. Then, ask behavioral interview questions that help reveal the candidates character. For example, you could ask how he handled an emergency situation recently or how he dealt with a co-worker conflict. Leave time for candidates to ask questions.Sometimes job interviews are crammed full with questions for the nurse and leave no time for her to ask her own questions. Thats unfortunate. Doing so may help her realize she isnt a great fit for the job after all.The worst thing is if a candidate leaves the interview feeling overwhelmed and unsure of what her responsibilities would be. Youll learn a bit more about a nurse by the typ es of questions she asks. If you find shes asking more about specific skills she needs rather than questions about the facility or patient load, it may be a red flag that she needs more experience.Determine whether candidates share your organizations values.A nurse with 15 years of clinical experience just walked through your door and youre thrilled to have someone with her skillset vying for a position. As the interview goes on, however, you realize that shes more concerned with becoming a nurse supervisor and less with being a team player.Dont let a candidates experience or numerous certificates convince you to hire her. An overqualified candidate may not fit into your facility and may also alienate other staff members.Hire for the needs of the facility.Do you manage an urban hospital that often treats patients flown in from hundreds of miles away? If so, your nurses must be comfortable with high-stress situations and quick on their feet experience in emergency rooms or trauma uni ts is preferred.Alternately, a nurse who is used to a high volume of patients at a large hospital may not enjoy working at a smaller hospital. Or that may be exactly what theyre looking for.Look for nurses with the traits your facility needs most, such as adaptability, commitment to growth, attention to detail and familiarity with specific types of patients.Though staff members will come and go, these hiring tips can help you hire nurses who will have a positive impact on both their patients and coworkers and hopefully stick around for the long haul.Eric Darienzo is president of RNnetwork, a travel nurse staffing company based in Boca Raton, Florida.

Turns out Leonardo da Vinci likely had ADHD according to a professor
Turns out Leonardo da Vinci likely had ADHD according to a professorTurns out Leonardo da Vinci likely had ADHD according to a professorHero of the Italian Renaissance Leonardo da Vinci is famous for his depiction of the Last Supper and the Mona Lisa, possibly one of the most well-known paintings in the world. But he welches also a procrastinator who had trouble completing projects and left unfinished works behind.According to his first biographer Giorgio Vasari, da Vinci died in 1519 regretting that he had offended God and mankind in not having worked at his art as he should have done. (The Mona Lisa, which he worked on for 16 years, is considered unfinished.)While impossible to make a post-mortem diagnosis for someone who lived 500 years ago, I am confident that ADHD is the most convincing and scientifically plausible hypothesis to explain Leonardos difficulty in finishing his works, the author of the paper, Professor Marco Catani, saidin a release. Catani is an expert in treating conditions like ADHD and autism from Kings College Londons Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology, and Neuroscience. In his paper, Catani focuses on historical accounts of da Vincis work practices and performance. Incomplete projects followed him wherever he went, and his work could be inconsistent.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreHis brain was also unusual in other ways he was left-handed and probably dyslexic.Historical records show Leonardo spent excessive time planning projects but lacked perseverance, Catani added. ADHD could explain aspects of Leonardos temperament and his strange mercurial genius. No follow-throughAlthough he was driven by excessive planning, even geniuses can lack follow-through which led to the connection with ADHD. In adults, the disorder is characterized by procrastination, the inability to focus, and the inability to complete tasks, among other things.AD HD isnt just an illness that befalls children. It often manifests in adults who have trouble with focus and follow-through and often dont reach their full potential. Catani says just knowing that da Vinci may have had ADHD could help break the stigma for other adults struggling with the disorder. It is incredible that Leonardo considered himself as someone who had failed in life, said Catani. I hope that the case of Leonardo shows that ADHD is not linked to low IQ or lack of creativity but rather the difficulty of capitalizing on natural talents. I hope that his legacy can help us to change some of the stigmas around ADHD.Catanis paper was published inBRAIN a Journal of Neurology. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEO s10 habits of mentally strong people

Heres why you cant hit home runs every time
Heres why you cant hit home runs every timeHeres why you cant hit home runs every timeI recently had a conversation with my new publisher about the book Im currently writing. I asked, What would make this book a home run for you? (Im not a baseball fan, but I am a fan of baseball analogies). He replied, There are no home runs in publishing, Ozan. Just singles and doubles.I cant tell you how much I love this response. For all my life, Ive been trying to hit home runs, but end up feeling dismayed when I inevitably come up short. As obvious as it is, this realization came as a huge relief Its impossible to hit home runs every time you step up to the plate. Whats more, you dontneedto hit a home run every time you step up to the plate. But dont take it from me. Remember theAmazon Fire phone? The company lost $170 mio over that gigantic misfire. Or even better, theGoogle Glass? It was supposed to be the next best thing after the smartphone, but ended up as an embarrassing failure. This was o ne piece of technology that was decidedly uncool to sport People wearing it were branded glassholes. These products feel like a distant memory now. When we look at successful businesses like Amazon and Google, we remember the highlights, not the lowlights. As Jeff Bezos says, A few big successes compensate for dozens and dozens of things that didnt work.Put differently, you must kiss a lot of frogs before you find the prince.Speaking of princes, Tom Hanks is one of my favorite actors. Hes made over a hundred movies, and he says seven or eight were good, a dozen more are decent, and the rest are god awful. But we dont remember the crappy Tom Hanks movies (yes, Im talking about Turner and Hooch). We remember Philadelphia, Big, and Apollo 13.Adam Grant gives several additional examples in his book,Originals. Shakespeare is known for a small number of his classics, but in the span of two decades, he penned 37 plays and 154 sonnets, some of which have been consistently slammed for unpoli shed prose and incomplete plots and character development. Picasso produced 1,800 paintings, 1,200 sculptures, 2,800 ceramics, and 12,000 drawings, only a fraction of which are noteworthy. Just a handful of Einsteins 248 publications had real impact. But when we judge the greatness of these individuals, Grant writes, we focus not on their averages, but their peaks.Theres a passage that I love in the private notes of the langerzhlung emperor Marcus Aurelius (published posthumously asMeditations). From 2,000 years ago, he writes Dont go expecting Platos Republic be satisfied with even the smallest progress, and treat the outcome of it all as unimportant. Arguably the most powerful man at the time is reassuring himself that its okay to not be Plato, that he cant hit home runs every time.If thats not amazing, I dont know what is.Consistent home runs are not only impossible, but trying to hit a home run every time can cripple the batter. This was the Achilles heel of the great tennis pla yer Andre Agassi. As he explains in his autobiography,Open, one of his trainers told him You try to hit a winner on every ball, when just being steady, consistent, meat and potatoes, would be enough to win ninety percent of the time. . . . Theres about five times a year you wake up perfect, when you cant lose to anybody, but its not those five times a year that make a tennis player. Or a human being, for that matter. Its the other times. The question I asked my publisher was flawed. Life isnt about repeatedly hitting home runs. Rather, its about strikeouts, singles, and doubles, until we slowly, but steadily, reach home base.Ozan Varol is a rocket scientist turned law professor and bestselling author.Click hereto download a free copy of his e-book, The Contrarian Handbook 8 Principles for Innovating Your Thinking. 6 Ways to Identify Your Most Coachable Candidates and Employees
6 Ways to Identify Your Most Coachable Candidates and Employees Organizations worldwide have embraced workplace coaching in recent years, and for good reason Coachingcan improveemployee interpersonal skills by 50 percentand reduce employee stress by 35 percent, among other benefits.Every business wants to improve employee performance, but for any coaching program to be effective, businesses need to hire employees who can work within that program employees who are, in other words, coachable. How can recruiters and hiring managers know whether theyre hiring someone truly coachable?Ive spent my career coaching both professional athletes and working professionals. In that time, Ive learned a lot about what coachability looks like both on and off the field. Coachable individuals are defined by a growth mindset, which manifests in six key characteristics1. DesireIt is difficult to coach anyone who doesnt want to become better. A fundamental first step to sel f-improvement is the desire to improve. An employee who maintains a desire to improve has nearly limitless potential, but one who doesnt care will never truly assimilate into your organization.2. FaithEmployees who believe in themselves and their abilities have what I call faith. Psychologists have found that people with certain beliefs about themselves will subconsciously seek evidence that supports those beliefs. Therefore, people who believe in their abilities to learnand groware mora responsive to coaching than thosewho dont.3. CommitmentTo quoterenowned management expert Peter Drucker, Unless commitment is made, there are only promises and hopes, but no plans. Its true Employees cant make a meaningful contribution unless they are committed to themselves, to others, and to your business. Hiring for this trait may sound like a no-brainer, but it is easily overlooked when we are too focused on hard skills and past experience.4. Self-AwarenessResearch shows people are a lot less sel f-aware than they think they are. Hows that for self-awareness?True self-awarenessis not simply having a thorough understanding of your own strengths and limitations.According toorganizational psychologist Tasha Eurich, true self-awareness requiresalso getting feedbackfrom others to understand how the rest of the world sees you. Self-aware candidates will seek that feedback, and thus be amenable to coaching.5. Willingness to LearnBeing willing to learn dovetails with desire, but it takes things a step further. Roger Federer, one of the greatest tennis players of all time, did not just have a desire to overcome his top rival Rafael Nadal he was willing to learn difficult skills to make it happen. Federer developed a topspin backhand that could be taken early in order to volley Nadals killer topspin forehand. Federers willingness to learn and then master this skill was an incredible feat. Employees who are willing to learn new skills even when the old ones have proven effective for quite some time are essentialto maintaining a coachable culture.6. OpennessSomeone who is open doesnt react poorly to criticism or correction, but takes it in stride. This quality can be tested in an interview by asking a candidate to prepare a role-relevant presentation. After the presentation is over, provide feedback and request changes, then watch to see how that input is received. If a candidate bristles or refuses to incorporate feedback the next time they give the presentation, they might not be as coachable as you would hope.Knowing what to look for in coachable employees is an important component in creating a truly coaching-focused organization. Once more coachable employeesare hired, managers might think about coaching the same way professional athletic coaches do The coach is held responsible for poor performance, not the player or employee. When managers adopt the paradigm of the professional athletic coach that they get paid according to how much their people improve that is when performance breakthroughs start to happen.A pioneer of the modern-day coaching movement, Alan Fine ispresident of InsideOut Developmentandco-creator of the widely recognized GROW Model.

How to Avoid Overthinking Your Work Problems - The Muse
How to Avoid Overthinking Your Work Problems - The MuseHow to Avoid Overthinking Your Work ProblemsEver spent any amount of time obsessing over a problem thats not really even a problem? Im guilty of this on a personal level (just ask my spouse), and there once was a time when I struggled with making mountains out of molehills at work too. But the thing to know? More often than not, unless youre really, truly slacking off and regularly under-delivering at your job, your so-called problems are most likely in your head. Best-selling author, Seth Godin, in fact, calls them make-believe. He explains that by elevating these and moving them to the top of our priority list, we avoid the things we should be paying close attention to.We turn little things into major ones, causing us to react in a senseless way to situations that are not dire. While the list of its-not-the-end-of-the-world issues is probably infinite, see if you identify with any of the ones below, and if you do, make a plan t o stop your negative, overblown thinking so you can focus on the stuff that really matters. 1. Youre Worried About Not Speaking Up in a MeetingEver left a meeting annoyed with yourself for not contributing? You literally sat in silence while your teammates interjected with this or offered that. Post-meeting, you cant help but replay the situation over again and again and again. Why on earth didnt you say anything? Now you just look like an incompetent idiot.Sure, you could go on feeling totally lame for staying quiet, or you could do something now. How can you focus on the big picture and take action that shows you were present and not zoning out? Because thats what really matters here- not how many words you got in compared to everyone else.If you have a big idea to add, just shoot out a follow-up email. Or, if your idea doesnt seem email-worthy, make a note to better prepare for your next meeting so you find it easier to weigh in quickly. Youre Only Allowed to Stress Out If.Youre rarely contributing to discussions- both in person and over email. While speaking up can feel scary for some of us, its important to do if you want to get your voice heard and earn a reputation for being thoughtful, innovative, creative, and a whole host of other positive adjectives. 2. Youre Worried That You Eat Lunch Alone Every DayAt your desk. Every day. Its your time to unwind and catch up with your personal email, or its a few minutes of social media browsing you allow yourself. And yet, as much as you enjoy your routine, you cant help feeling like people are talking about you. Or not even realizing you exist. Youre Only Allowed to Stress Out IfYou havent made any friends at work Although you dont have to be BFFs with your co-workers, it helps to be friendly and open to conversation. Eat at your desk alone if thats your preference, but dont avoid getting to know a few of your teammates in other ways.3. Youre Worried That You Always Leave Work Before Your BossMost days you head out after youve whittled your to-do list down in a satisfactory way. Your brain doesnt function too well past 5 PM, so you often find yourself shutting down your computer and packing up your thing before your boss does. You stress a little about it each time, but, frankly, after an hour or more of trying to run out the clock, your eyes begin to glaze over and you feel like the only answer is to get out of there before you go nuts. Youre Only Allowed to Stress Out IfYoure leaving early because youre bored or youve been told youre not working hard enough. If this is the case, then your guilty exit is cause for concern. In the long run, your stagnant position or your reluctance to work diligently is going to creep up on you, and youre going to wish youd talked to your boss about getting more assignments or read up on how to be more productive. Im not going to pretend otherwise Theres always going to be an opportunity to make something out of nothing. So, the next time youre tempted to moan and groan over that little thing, take a moment and ask yourself if youre stressing out over nothing.

Six Cover Letter Tips - CraftResumes.com
Six Cover Letter Tips - CraftResumes.comSix Cover Letter Tips - CraftResumes.comSix Cover Letter TipsYou may be asking yourself if you still need a titelseite letter today. Cover letters are still very important and are usually the first introduction youll have to a company. According to a study conducted by Robert Half 2018, 90% of executives say that writing a titelblatt letter is valuable. A well-written deckblatt letter can help you stand out from the crowd, whereas a poorly-written cover letter, that appears like a copy and paste that you sent to all employers, can hurt your chances for an interview. This article will outline six key elements of a writing an effective cover letter to help you stand out.Identify the Hiring ManagerGlassdoor (2017) demonstrated that the average corporate job opening receives more than 250 resumes. Its way too common for applicants to blanketly apply through the various job boards and company websites without giving any effort to try and find the co ntact person. Taking the time to get personal and identify the decision maker (hiring manager) will make you stand out from the masses of applicants who address the cover letter by simply writing to whom it may concern. The extra little effort required to locate the decision maker and address the cover letter to them specifically will pay off in spades. Tailor the Cover LetterIn addition to addressing the cover letter to the hiring manager, you should tailor the cover letter to the specific location youre applying for. Be sure to include the relevant keywords and highlight exactly why youre qualified for the position. You can use the most relevant achievements from your resume or include new accomplishments that are tailored for the position. This customization will clearly separate you from the candidates who use a generic cover letter that they use for every position they applied for. Showcase Your ValueJust like you resume, you want your cover letter to showcase your value and im mediately indicate why you would be a great fit for the specific job you are applying. An easy way to achieve this is with a concise opening paragraph followed by a few bullets with your relevant achievements that are applicable to the position. Remember that employers want to know about your previous contributions and how you are going to make a significant difference at their company.Clearly Indicate Why Youre InterestedOne of the most common interview questions asked from hiring managers is why do you want to work for us? Your cover letter gives you the chance to include this information unlike your resume. You should be very specific on exactly why you want to work for the company. For example, you may have seen the companys new product release that you want to be involved with. Perhaps youve been following the companys social media channels and constantly read about the positive culture of the organization where you would be a great fit. Make every company and unique position t hat you apply for feel as if its the only one youre considering.Keep it ConciseLinkedIn (2017) conducted a detailed study of hiring managers and discovered that the average recruiter spends only 6-seconds reviewing a resume Knowing this, you can count on recruiters spending less time reviewing your cover letter. Your cover letter needs to be concise and always less than one-page. Avoid using lengthy paragraphs with too much information. Instead, use very concise bullet points that are easy to read and can quickly showcase your skills and qualifications for the position.ProofreadThere is no excuse for submitting a cover letter (along with your resume) to a job that contains spelling and grammatical errors. Although most people will use Microsoft Word or a similar word processing program with spell checkers, you still need to proofread your cover letter to guarantee that it didnt miss anything. The spell checker wont be able to properly review things such as specific company names, pr oducts, positions, etc., where an egregious spelling error can cost you the position. Finally, be sure to proofread for any grammatical errors that a writing program could easily miss. Mixing up homophones (words that sound alike but are different) is an easy error to miss. You may have listed your when you should have listed youre. Finally, be certain to spell the hiring managers name correctly that you are addressing the cover letter to since a spell checker will not be able to catch this.ConclusionThe purpose of the cover letter is to get the recruiter to read your resume and hopefully lead to being invited for an interview. A study conducted by Careerbuilder (2015) highlighted that 49% of employers wanted job seekers to include a cover letter for the position theyre applying for. Remember to 1) identify the hiring manager, 2) tailor the cover letter for each position, 3) showcase your value, 4) clearly indicate why youre interested, 5) keep it concise, and 6) proofread it for co nsistency and to avoid any spelling/grammatical errors. Cover letters are still important today and will be for the foreseeable future.
